Armenia plans constitutional referendum for 2027- justice minister

A constitutional referendum in Armenia is planned to be held in 2027, Justice Minister Grigor Minasyan told journalists.

The dates have been tentatively determined during the working discussions of the Constitutional Reform Commission, AzVision.az reports citing Armenian media.

Minister says, there will be detailed work on the complex document and public discussions.

He said that initially, there was a discourse on whether to amend the current Constitution or to adopt a new basic law, and in the end, they came to the second option.

“We discussed and came to a consensus - we need a new Constitution, not constitutional amendments,” Minasyan noted.

The minister added that during the working meetings of the commission the issue of changing the first three articles of the Constitution was not discussed, as well as the issue of removing the reference to the Declaration of Independence was not considered.

The issue of a stable parliamentary majority is at the centre of attention now, and the initiators of constitutional reforms want to enshrine this norm in the future Constitution.
