Austrian political scientist Martin Malek has commented on the results of the meeting held between Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders in Sochi, AzVision.az reports.
"On the eve of the meeting, there were many assumptions that the sides would sign agreements, especially on the beginning of the process of delimitation and demarcation of the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the other one on the opening of new transport routes between the two countries. Although it didn't happen, the sides adopted a statement on the steps taken to open transport links and preparations for the work of the commission on the delimitation of borders," the Austrian political scientist told reporters.
"There is not any final decision in the statement of November 26, 2021. However, it stresses the importance of fulfilling the provisions of the trilateral statements of November 9, 2020, and January 11, 2021, and taking the advantage of the economic potential of the region," Martin Malek also added.
Malek stated that the Caucasus is one of the most interesting regions in the world for political scientists, ethnologists, historians, archaeologists, linguists, religious scholars, and researchers interested in conflict studies but it is not easy to deal with.
"Armenia was irreconcilable during all negotiations starting from 1991 to 2020. Armenia believed that it had a military advantage in Karabakh. However, the situation has changed since November 2020 for obvious reasons. Possibly, Armenia will be more flexible this time. We just need to wait until December 15 and then analyze the results of the meeting. In any case, it would be surprising if any breakthroughs occurred in conflict settlement," the political scientist also added.
