Azerbaijani named GUAM secretary general
Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) has made several organizational decisions, including on appointing Azerbaijan
The 25th meeting of the GUAM Council of Foreign Ministers has been held in Bratislava, according to the message.

The meeting was attended by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, Georgian Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Natalia Gherman, Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin (who chaired the meeting) and others.

The Council of Foreign Ministers praised the adoption of the resolution “On cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM” during the 69th session of UN General Assembly.

.The Council of Foreign Ministers emphasized GUAM’s contribution to adoption of the Political Declaration on Strengthening Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional and sub-regional organizations at the 69th session of UN General Assembly.

The Council also welcomed the speech of GUAM secretary general at OSCE Permanent Council, stressed its significance in promoting the goals and tasks of GUAM.

The Council of Foreign Ministers discussed a range of issues on GUAM’s cooperation especially in the sphere of economy and trade and in the law enforcement sphere.

Moreover, the Council approved Moldova as the coordinating country of the working group on culture and tourism for 2015-2016.

The Council of Foreign Ministers also discussed the issues of cooperation of GUAM with other states and international organizations.

Furthermore, the Council made a decision to hold its next meeting as part of the 70th session of UN General Assembly in New York and agreed on its exact date through diplomatic channels.

The GUAM format was established by post-Soviet countries in 1997 at the meeting of the heads of states of the European Union in Strasburg. Uzbekistan joined this format in 1999, but left after four years.

During the first summit of this format in Kiev in 2006, a decision was adopted declaring GUAM an international organization and about its new name, the `Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM`.
